Literacyworks Center reached its target enrollment number of 76 students for the 2016 Spring Semester. To date, the Center has less than a 10% student dropout rate compared to a historical 60% drop-out for this at-risk population at community colleges.
Now, as we approach the start of the 2016 Fall Semester at Santa Rosa Junior College, Literacyworks Center is reaching its maximum enrollment number of 84 students. Most of our students have families with young children. Many are working full-time on ranches and vineyards. The Center’s goal is to help improve reading skills and to assist students in accessing the comprehensive support services at the JC.
When Center Director Chris Schultz and Executive Administrator Rita Sorpranith spoke to students during the application process, they identified a couple of recurring themes about why they wanted to improve their academic skills such as ‘so I can read to my children’, and ‘so I can speak with my employer better’ and ‘so I can get a better job’.
The Center is working with a new partner, SRJC's High School Equivalency Program [HEP]. This group of individuals participates in an intensive education program to prepare them for the high school equivalency test. After they pass the test, they are then referred to Literacyworks Center to assist them in their continued education at Santa Rosa JC.

Literacyworks Center Students Attending Santa Rosa Junior College’s Circle of Honor
Center students who are receiving our Fall 2016 Adult Literacy Award will be attending Santa Rosa Junior College’s Circle of Honor on Wednesday, August 17th, 2016, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at Santa Rosa Junior College (Santa Rosa Campus, Under the Oaks).
Honoring the generosity of SRJC donors and dedication of SRJC students, the Circle of Honor provides an opportunity for donors to learn more about the educational goals of their student recipients, and for students to express appreciation for their scholarship award.
Support for Literacyworks
Clover and Marin Community Foundation have recently helped fund the Center. Literacyworks submitted a grant proposal for 2016-17 for operational funding for the Center to work with Marin County adults. Clover gave a generous grant to support the Center activities.
Literacyworks Professional Development Launches
Literacyworks Professional Development is open for business. We are providing professional development opportunities to ABE and ESL professionals throughout the US.
With 21 years as the LINCS Regional Professional Development Center for the 14 states and islands in the West, access to over 130 researched-based ABE and ESL PD workshops and over 40 national Subject Matter Expert trainers in adult Ed and literacy PD topics, we are expanding our services to include Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Corrections PD training.
