For homework, please read and listen to the story about Columbus Day. Then answer this question and email it to me.

Christopher Columbus and the other Europeans came to the Americas to exploit the land and native people to get rich. How is this different than why you came to America?

On Tuesday, we will listen to people with different accents speaking English. We will try to understand what they say. We will also look at the American National Anthem. We want to understand what the words mean.

1. I asked you to call me on my cell phone at 831-234-4480 and leave a message that includes your telephone number. The goal is to speak clearly with excellent pronunciation so I can understand every word of your message.
2. I asked you to study the pages in your picture dictionary that talk about family. We will be practicing using the vocabulary for different family members. Please study pages 34 and 35 of your picture dictionary so that you have a good idea of what each word means

HERE IS YOUR HOMEWORK TO DO BEFORE WE MEET NEXT TUESDAY, JUNE 8.

1. Watch the two very short videos (see below) that I will send you in separate emails that tell you how to pronounce the numbers. You may want to watch the videos several times. Pronouncing the numbers correctly is very important because people will not understand you when you say numbers if you don't pronounce them correctly. And you will not understand what number people say if you don't know how to say the numbers correctly.

2. Practice saying the numbers and then record yourself saying them in an audio file that you create in a Pages document. If you don't remember how to create a document in Pages or how to record an audio file, please call, text or email Paul or me.

3. Read the stories called Short Vowel Sound Dictation Story and Long Vowel Sound Dictation Story. They are in a file attached to this email called Vowel Dictation Stories. Study the lists of words with short vowel sounds and the lists of words with long vowel sounds. This will help you remember the difference between how you say the long and short vowel sounds.

4. Study the chart called cardinal and ordinal numbers chart. It is in a file attached to this email. Come to class on Tuesday prepared to discuss both cardinal and ordinal numbers!

1. Listen carefully to the Long Vowel Sound Dictation Story Audio File. This is a recording of me reading a story that has lots of words with long vowels. Try to identify the long a, e, i , o and u sounds that you hear. Remember the long vowel sounds are the names of the vowels.

2. Write the sentences that you hear me read in the story in a Pages document. You may need to listen to the recording a few times. Underline the long vowel sounds in each word. Email me the sentences you wrote.

3. Read the story called Long Vowel Sound Dictation Story.

4. Read the Memorial Day story. Answer the questions. Email your answers to me. We will talk about Memorial Day on Tuesday.

Extra Practice: If you'd like to do some extra practice with long vowel sounds, you can write your own sentences or story using lots of long vowel sounds and email them to me. You can also record yourself reading what you wrote and email that to me too.

1. Listen carefully to a recording of me reading a story that has lots of words with short vowels. Try to identify the short a, e, i , o and u sounds that you hear. The recording is attached to this email and it will also be available on the class website at http://www.literacysworks.org/grc.

2. Write the sentences that you hear me read in the story. You may need to listen to the recording a few times.

3. Take a picture of the sentences you wrote and send it to me by text or email. If you want to type the sentences into an email or a document, you can do that too!

4. Look at every page of your picture dictionary. Write down 10 topics listed in the book that you would like the class to study. Send me your list by email or text.
