PREPARING A TAX RETURN
FEDERAL taxes are for the whole country (the United States)
STATE taxes are for your state (California, Arizona, etc.)
Where to Get Forms
If you filed taxes last year, the IRS will mail forms to you. The forms are free. If you need a different form, or if you do not get one in the mail, you can look for forms at:
- Post Offices
- Public Libraries
- IRS – Call 1-800-829-3676
- Internet: Click here, then type in the number of the form on the second box on the left.
Form W-4 – you give your employer this form to show how much money to withhold from your paycheck for your taxes
Form W-2 -- your employer gives you this form at the end of the year to use with your taxes
Form 1040 or Form 1040 EZ -- the forms to file federal income taxes
Form 1040X -- you can use this form to change a mistake on a tax return you already sent in. You have up to three years to make changes.
Form 1099MISC -- for work you do for more than $600 where you are not a regular employee (such as contract work); this gets sent to you by whoever paid you.
