Your Credit History
A good credit history will help you when you want to rent an apartment, get a car loan, or buy a home. It also helps you get lower interest rates on loans.
Check your credit report
Three companies keep records on your credit. You can get a copy of your credit report from them. Each company may charge a fee $8 to $16 for a report. You can get a free copy if you have been denied credit or were turned down for a job or an apartment in the past 60 days.
If you see a mistake on your report, contact the credit reporting agency in writing right away. They are required by law to look into the mistake and back to you as soon as possible.
Negative information about your credit can stay on your record for up to seven years.
