A team of scientists from Oregon State University is going to sea. The principal investigators for this cruise are Dr. Evelyn Sherr and Dr. Barry Sherr, biological oceanographers at Oregon State University. They study the activity of bacteria and their role in the ocean, as well as the effect of trace metals on microplankton. As Dr. Ev Sherr says, “This cruise is about nothing you can see with the naked eye”.
Dr. Krista Longnecker is the Chief Scientist for the cruise. The R/V Wecoma will depart from Newport, Oregon on September 13, 2004. The ship is scheduled to return to Newport, Oregon on September 25, 2004. The cruise track will be along a transect from east to west at the latitude of Heceta Head, Oregon, at a distance between three and 127 nautical miles from the coast.
The team will be investigating two questions.
