Literacyworks and COTS

Literacyworks assisted in starting the new COTS (Committee on the Shelterless in Petaluma) Family Literacy program by providing resources and training for volunteers and staff. Primarily through special programming, story-times, and other interaction with the families, COTS volunteer tutors and staff members demonstrate and model reading aloud and support parents in their role as their child's first teacher.

In a continuing effort to break the cycle of low literacy, the mission of COTS Family Literacy program is to offer coordinated early-literacy services to families that include an adult caregiver and at least one school age child. Literacyworks will continue to provide support to help this wonderful program grow. We hope to also assist COTS to starting an adult literacy program next year.

Literacyworks Awarded LINCS Grant

LINCS

Literacyworks has been awarded the grant for the Literacy Information and Communication System (LINCS) Regional Professional Development Center for Region 4 (RPDC$) which includes Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, Guam, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Republic of Palau.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE) recently announced the results of its recent competitions for LINCS. OVAE’s continued investment in LINCS signals its intent to more strategically utilize LINCS, for assisting states and local adult education agencies in promoting teacher effectiveness and evidence-based instruction in adult education. As a regional professional development center, Literacyworks will work with states to deploy evidence-based materials and professional development activities to the field of adult education. The regions are realigned to correspond with OVAE’s administrative regions, under the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA).
