Group Feedback

from the National Conference on Family Literacy

Brainstorm…

  • Maria enjoyed the research
  • Lucy learned Even Start standards
  • Amy was disappointed that there was only one model of family literacy
  • Take advantage of any opportunity to promote California literacy stories!! Send in pictures, etc. Share with the rest of the world.
  • Susan: would have appreciated more adult/parent focus
  • Jacquie-idea: next time an identifying object for California FFL/LLABS (a pin?)
  • Amy: Ask Even Start & Head Start to promote what we’re doing
  • Frances: co-present at conferences co- sponsor, update Patterns
  • My Visit to the Library coloring book resurrect? put it on-line?
  • LLABS unit was a hit! Thank you to everyone who made that possible!
  • Paula: library FFL programs should be better represented — put this on your evaluation
  • Lucy: if possible schedule a meeting at another point in the conference (in the middle rather than the end)
  • Deborah: Found she could connect to almost every workshop
  • Patty: Life & social skills need to be taught
  • Caroline: also liked the research-based presentations. Use the listserv to share good ideas from NCFL "nuggety things"
  • Write a brief paragraph on something you’ve learned — page on the website
  • Make sure you’re on the FFL and/or LLABS listservs

Burning Issues

  • FFL application needs to be simplified, and so does the reporting system
[CLLS is moving toward one "comprehensive" application and one report form — both electronic.
Also moving toward outcomes-based reporting; not "high-stakes" i.e. tied to funding baseline.]
  • FFL certification for staff
  • Message from Dr. Starr to Library Directors — what’s going on with the budget? What’s our plan?
  • Dr. Starr’s speech (from the pre-conference) video clip archived on our website?
  • We need a database for reporting, assessment/accountability, program management, etc.
  • Need realistic "standards" for development of the 1-5 year-old
  • Parent survey: the State Library needs both the pre& post survey.
